Jury Duty???!!!!

I have been anxiously checking my mailbox every morning, because my case was transferred to CSC and I'm trying to be optimistic that I'll get something from them in the mail.

Well I checked this morning, and I got a... Jury Summons!?! What I find most amusing about this is that under why I don't qualify it says, "Not a US citizen - please include a copy of your resident card" oh if only I had one!

I also find it amusing that they want me to pay for postage to tell them why I don't qualify.

Has this happened to anyone else? I'm debating buying a lottery ticket with my luck.

I have had two jury summons in the almost 4 years I've been here. I did some online questionnaire and stated I was not a U.S. citizen. I then get a letter by mail saying that I had to provide a copy of my card so I sent a copy. Then I got another letter stating I was exempted.

I probably would just send them a copy of your passport and visa.

That's odd....

jury duty here is selected from people who are registered to vote. thought that was standard. Therefore, if you are not a USC you can't ever be called for duty.

*edited to say* Just did a quick search. Found out that some places use the DMV as the name draw for jury duty. Not the case in my county, they use the voter registration.

That's what I thought! but I went to the az jury duty website and it said people are also selected from the dmv database. It would make sense if it were only people who could vote, they wouldn't waste money sending it to PR's or would be PR's.

In the area where I live it's quite weird too:

Yes, the names are from the DMV pool. So you get the Jury Summons. On it there's a box to tick if you're not a citizen. Then, if you tick that box, the instructions in the summons tell you to call a certain number. You call the number, spend about 15 minutes being taken through a questionaire, including the question "are you a citizen". As the answer is still "no", you punch the appropirate key.

THEN - but only then - you get the announcement "you are not allowed to do jury duty, send the letter back, with the appropriate box ticked. (And by the way, judging from experience, this little game can happen as often as twice a year.)"

Okay, I made that last part in brackets up, but I know from other non-citizens here that they do get more than one summons for jury duty per year, and it's the same old, same old every time.

I'm the USC have been registered to vote since I was 18. (I'm 33 now) and have NEVER gotten a summons for jury duty. One of those flukey things.

I got a similar letter and simply ignored it since I'm not eligible to serve on the jury.

Yeah, I became a US citizen in July 2003 and served on my first jury in April of 2004.
