We can trot out the Nazi analogies all day, but they're not going to do anything useful.

Thus, rclouse's use of the term Godwinned. Your point was already made by rclouse, albeit in a much more pithy manner :P

I hadn't seen his post, but given how often everyone whines about Nazis around here, maybe most of them missed Godwin's law and corollaries.

On the other hand, if we keep batting the Nazi analogy around, then we should decide who the brave allies are. If Iran is Germany, then maybe the UK is the US, and we're Stalin?

Perhaps for not-so-obvious reasons, I'd prefer to stick with the 'Axis of Evil' analogies...

Why, when speaking of diplomacy, does no one ever use the Cuban Missile crisis, a triumph of knowing when not to bomb? I don't know what the right thing to do with Iran is, mind, but this 'every bit of diplomacy is JUST THE SAME AS APPEASEMENT' is a stupid meme that deserves to be retired.

Sometimes diplomacy is smart. Sometimes it isn't. None of the players in the current drama are Weimar Germany. Holding a group of sailors isn't the same as invading Czechoslovakia. Iran isn't in Europe. We can trot out the Nazi analogies all day, but they're not going to do anything useful.

We used a naval blockage against cuba. Slightly more than just diplomacy.

Learn your history if you are going to spout off. France and Britain gave Hitler the Sudetenland (part of Czechoslovakia) at the threat of invading Czechoslovakia. The country was done after that.

It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I thought that the German's had sold Iran Leopard tanks recently.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

What have I said that's wrong? Hitler demands the Sudetenland, then establishes a military presence in order to invade Czechoslovakia. No one stands up on either occasion in the hopes that he'll be satisfied.

Invading Czechoslovakia isn't the same as not releasing sailors whether I give you the full history of 1930s Germany or not. The situations aren't the same. The risks aren't the same. Posting little pictures of Hitler doesn't change that.

And during the Cuban Missile crisis, there was a very hawkish contingent arguing that a blockade and diplomacy was too wimpy, and we should trot out the nukes. There's a whole realm of alternatives, including military ones, that stop short of launching a nuclear war, so I'm wondering why everyone seems to be thinking that launching WWIII is a proportional response.

Are we sure the sailors weren't in Iranian waters? Not that I don't trust U.S. and U.K. intel, but....

And so the conspiracy theories begin...

Never mind that the 'prisoners' are displayed on television, then asked to give false (presumably) statements of guilt (again, on international television)... forget all that - and don't even consider what it takes to get a serviceman to openly (on tv) give a statement like that... am sure they just asked them nicely...

And the UK.

Leopards are a large part of Canada's military too..

And lets not forget our role (US)...remember the Iran/Contra fiasco..?

Well, Iran will likely aly itself with Russia if we do a first strike. We have no way of counter acting a couple of hundred ICBM's. Likely enough will come through making life hear somewhat less comfortable than we are used to. The sub-prime market will definately expand thats for sure.

The first coordinates the Iranians gave for the captured sailors was in Iraqi waters. They quickly gave new coordinates inside Iranian waters when we pointed that out. We have satellite pictures of the capture.

This is so frustrating. People who opposes War likes to blame others, and kill who deserves to be dead. And people who like to bring War also like to kill people. I want to buy my own island and live on it with my wife! ^_^

Just make sure it's not in Iranian waters... ;)

 Wouldn't matter. Iran would just lie.
