Hey folks my fiance and I just did the K-1 process. She got here on 1/30/07. We got married on 2/15/07.

Applied for SSN on 3/21/07 (still waiting for card). I tried to do it in her married name but they said they couldn't do it now until the AOS goes through or is approved. Therefore she will be getting it in her maiden name.

I am now getting all of the AOS paperwork filled out. Only thing is that I'm not sure to do it all in her maiden name or married name. My feeling is that since I will be submitting a copy of my marriage license along with the AOS that I should do it all in her married name.

Am I correct?

Other question. Does it sound right that they first make her SSN in her maiden name and then after AOS change it to the married name? Or could they have done it all in her married name??

Thank you all for you help!!

Changing the last name is optional. We are traditionalists so Claudeth took my last name. She was able to change her name on the social security card when she received her EAD but it took about six weeks to get the new card. They told us all they needed was something official from USCIS so the EAD worked. Good luck!

Married name, if it is her intention to use her married name, that way the Green-Card, and EAD cards have her married name. Later when you do get the cards, visit SSA and have the name changed on the SSN card, I would wait for green-card before changing name on SSN, so that you can do 2 things at same time, (Remove the "With DHS Authorization" notation, and change name)

If you showed them the original marriage certificate, they could have issued her SSN in her married name. My SSN was issued using my married name without any difficulty. Unfortunately, there is no consistency in process among each government office, including immigration. You're at the mercy of employee interpretation and/or expertise.

Submit the AOS in her married name, also. Just make sure she brings the marriage certificate to show the legal name change with her when she goes for her biometrics.

hey guys thanx alot for your replies and the information very much helpful.

I will do what most of you suggested. Just wait for the EAD in her married name and then adjust the name on SSN later.

best wishes to all
