Well, tagging onto the original reason for this thread:

Stopped by the SSA Office in Norcross GA, took a number and waited forever to be called (about an hour or so). Once I was called up, I provided my Canadian Passport (with K1 visa enclosed), I-94, Alberta birth certificate (probably wasn't needed, but brought it just in case) and a pre-filled SS-5 Form (link included for your convenience). The guy who eventually helped me out was quite nice, down to earth. Asked me when I began living here and if I've visited before and for how long, and asked me if I've applied for an SSN in the past and if I've ever received benefits through Social Security before, otherwise it was just random chit-chat and banter while he typed away at his computer. After a little bit, he provided me a copy of a receipt that states I should receive my SSN within 2 weeks.

Very much painless, it was just a busy location.
