Is it true that absolutely no documents need to be translated if they are either in english or in the native tongue of the immigrant's country? It certainly seems true from the official website but has this been the case in practice? since immigration officer are given certain autonomy to ask for other stuff... Is it better to translate all documents in Portuguese (in my case) just in case? or is this really really unnecessary?

When you are sending in the documents to the United States in the original packet, EVERYTHING needs to be translated into English.

If you are referring to the consulate where you have your interview, then everything needs to either be in English or Portuguese. If it is in another language other than those two, then you will need to have it translated.

We did not translate any of our English documents into Spanish for my fiance's interview in Nicaragua, and there was not a problem.
