I am currently on a non-profit H1-B visa(2/22/2016 - 11/30/2018). I completed my bachelors in comp science in December 2014, used my OPT 1st year from Feb 2015-Feb 2016, STEM extension from Feb 2016 - March 2016.



I am also pursuing my part time masters with my employer which is a public university. I plan on graduating in May 2017.



I want to change jobs and work for a profit company. My question is what are my options if I want to convert my non-profit H1-B to a profit one.



Option 1 -


Stay at non-profit university. Apply for the green card. My non-profit employer is ready to file for my green card once I finish my master in May 2016 under EB2 category. How much time before I can leave this non-profit company and move o a different company. How much time does I-485 take and can I work for any company after I-485?



Option 2 -


Get a job before April 2017 or April 2018 and request my employer to file for a new profit H1-B and start work in October. Hard to convince.




What other options do I have if I have to work elsewhere?

What other options do I have if I have to work elsewhere?

Call your HR and ask for the terms of the EB2 green card. Most employers would want some type of long term commitment before filing an employer based green card.

Other options...DV lottery, investment based green card, bonafide spouse based green card???

Option 1 is great. I don't see any need to look for other options.
