Mobileye broke ties with Tesla Motors because the Silicon Valley firm was pushing the envelope in terms of safety with the design of its Autopilot driver-assistance system, its chairman has said.

It is not designed to cover all possible crash situations in a safe manner, said Amnon Shashua, who is also chief technology officer at the Israel-based maker of collision detection and driver assistance systems.

No matter how you spin it, [Autopilot] is not designed for that. It is a driver assistance system and not a driverless system.

The safety of Autopilot, which helps drivers stay in lanes and steer on highways, was thrust into the public spotlight after a fatal crash involving a Tesla Model S driver using the new technology in May. Tesla said in a blogpost after the accident that neither Autopilot nor the driver noticed the white side of the tractor trailer against a brightly lit sky, so the brake was not applied.

In China, a family is suing Tesla after the driver was killed when a Model S struck a road-weeping truck.

I often wonder why Tesla didn't use a combination of radar and optical for their feature. I wonder if it might have something to do with the power requirement differences for either option and the potential effect on range of the vehicle? The other thing I don't understand about the Tesla autopilot system is that it has been reported that if a driver's hands are off the wheel for too long, it simply deactivates. Autopilot features can lead to a driver becoming distracted or drowsy which may lead to their hands leaving the wheel. I assume they give some form of warning when it happens for too long, but to simply deactivate after some period seems wrong as a sleepy driver may need some time to gain their senses before they can take over and depending on the situation this might be disatourous.

As a comparison, the story I read about the GM Supercruise driver assist feature mentioned that if the feature finds that the driver is inattentive via some form of eye scan, the feature signals via warnings and even using a human voice through Onstar and if there is still no response it parks the vehicle.

Not sue either is right, but if I was using this feature I would rather have the vehicle park itself if I fell asleep rather than simply deactivate.

Speculation: When the driver assist functions we added to the Tesla, a full on autopilot was not fully appreciated as the end game. I think the decision to enable auto pilot through a software update may have been premature. I know very little about sensors but I do know that you usually need to combine them for redundancy to accommodate a variety of environments.

I agree. It seems that some people took the whole "Autopilot" feature beyond its intended performance parameters. The biggest issues with these features and those coming that are reported to be fully autonomous is the need to have a complete DFMEA and FTA. Trying to take care of all the possible use cases may be more than these software programmers can accomplish.
