Medical exam expiration date

This is a very very stupid question, but I couldn't really find a concrete answer on this after searching on the forum. So to quench my curiosity I'm asking this question:

So I understand that the medical is valid for 6 months for IR-1/CR-1 applicants. Now the question is - does that 6 months clock start as soon as you get the medical done or when your report gets sent to the embassy? So for example: if someone were to show up for their medical on 9/12/2016, but the report doesn't get sent to the embassy til 9/20/2016, does that mean 9/12/2016 sets the expiration date for the medical report or the later date does?

The 6 months starts from first day at medical.
