US citizen as dual citizen within central america...

Hey all,

Looking for people who have experience specifically with having dual citizenship between the US and a Latin-American country. This will be a step that we will take way down the road in the future but I also like to be informed.

Now from my time that I have scoured google I have found that my Nicaraguan husband will never loose his citizenship to his country per his country's constitution which states that a Nica can't loose something that he's born with. (my vernacular and from my understanding). He's got a lot of buddies who are dual Nica and US citizens through marriage so I know this is true. I also understand that I, as a US citizen, can't loose my US citizenship since I was born here, supposedly.

My question is that I keep coming across is stuff like this: " a person who acquires a foreign nationality by applying for it may lose U.S. nationality. In order to lose U.S. nationality, the law requires that the person must apply for the foreign nationality voluntarily, by free choice, and with the intention to give up U.S. nationality" (excerpt from travel.state.gov)

My question is: when I, down the road, opt to get Nica citizenship will I somehow "lose U.S. nationality"? I'm sure I'm thinking way too much and the answer is probably simple but...

I appreciate any insight someone can offer into this.

I can't offer a definite answer as I too have been looking into dual citizenship myself (U.S. born with Mexican born father and now spouse).

As far as losing U.S. nationality, I don't believe you "lose" it unless you actually "intend" to give it up - and by that I assume it means probably swearing you are giving up U.S. nationality in front of a U.S. consular official or something along those lines.

I haven't gone thru with it myself because I'm still going to further look into the cons and how much exposure I'd be putting myself at risk for. Basically, if you travel to that country of dual citizenship, you can be treated as a citizen of that country BUT that can also put you at risk of something that instead of notifying the U.S. embassy right away, that is delayed because you are not being treated as a U.S. citizen and that country's rules/laws come first.
