My wife is currently an international medical student studying abroad and will be applying for US medical residency in a few years. She is currently in the process of doing her examinations for medical residency. I myself have a career here in Canada. We made the decision to move to the US for her career. Can we begin the green card process while she is still completing medical school or do we have to wait until she gets matched? How will the process go?

Thanks.

Are you a US citizen?

If you are, then look up the IR1/CR1 timelines, might or might not work with her residency/exams plans.

I am a Canadian citizen living in Canada.

My wife is an American citizen studying abroad.

Of course she sure can start the process with her abroad. It will take possible 10 to 12 months form filing to interview in Canada.road.

Just know after approval at USCIS once you get to NVC and the Affidavit of Support you will need a joint sponsor that meets the poverty guidelines for their household plus you.

Step by step is up in the guides at top of the page.
