My family recently got a visiting visa to the us for our mum's funeral service. They went to the embassy as a group and they were approved, my question is must the principal applicant of this group be among the first set of people from the group to travel before anyone else or this only applies to immgrant visa and not non immigrant visa.

The tourist visas, if they are normal B visas, are stand-alone; the group may have gone to the embassy together, but each will have gotten their own visa and can travel whenever they need to attend the funeral and other arrangements.

Immigrant visas are a separate issue; usually, the principle immigrant needs to travel first or at the same time as the others.
