Hello everyone,

I've hold green card for five years and I’m preparing my N-400 form for applying citizenship. I’m wondering how to finish the previous marriage information if I forget the details and lost the marriage certificate and divorce decree?

My first marriage was ~17 years ago in China. We divorced after two years when both of us were in US. we got our divorce decree in one China’s US embassy. However, I can not find the original marriage certificate and the divorce decree and don’t have any copy. I don’t have any connection with my previous spouse too although I only know my previous spouse is in still living in US. I tried to contact China's US embassy, but failed to get any response now.

My current green card status is not relate to my first marriage at all.

So I’m just wondering how to finish the previous marriage part in N-400? Do I need to get the divorce decree for the interview?

Thanks all!

You have to send your divorce papers with your n-400 application. You have to get a copy of it. If you contact the country where you got divorced most likely you would have to send the cost for the copy of your divorced papers. Look online and maybe it can tell you more. You do need to send a copy of your divorced papers with your application.

Vietnam, China governments are well-known for hassles when we need them. Only way is to contact them in person, not on the phone or email of course.

did you divorce in USA, and had the divorce decree sent on via the china consulate?

if yes,

then

there is, somewhere,

a USA county in a USA state where the divorce was finalized. If you can remember the state, then remember the county or city name - you can find the web portal for that county, get some divorce records ordered.

whats up ?

Thanks! Just remember more details. We went to New york Consulate and filed a form (divorce attorney). Then they sent it back to china, then my friend help me do it in China and mailed the final divorce paper back to me. I probably can ask my friend to check it in China.
