im pretty sure married filing jointly usually gets the best returns.

2006 - Entered US on F-1
2009 - COS to H-1
2011 - Married USC

Conditional GC Process:
04/2012 - Concurrent I-130 petition / I-485 AOS / I-765 EAD / I-131 AP sent
35 days to biometrics, 73 days to EAD/AP combo card, 85 days to interview, 96 days to Conditional Green Card

04/2014 - Eligible for ROC

06/2014 - I-751 package filing joint with spouse sent

5 days to extension,37 days to biometrics, 172 days to CSC transfer, 247 days to Green Card

04/2015 - Eligible for Citizenship

09/2015 - N-400 package filing on basis of USC spouse sent

29 days to biometrics, 105 days to interview, 147 days to oath and US citizenship

~ 9 years and 6 months from first entry to US citizenship

You can only do married filing separately if you have lived apart from each other for at least a year. It'll be pretty obvious that you don't live apart, since you'll both be using the same address.

Nice try.

Also, married filing jointly gives you the best returns. It's better to owe anyway.

Any married person can always do Married Filing Separately. You mean Head of Household?

Maybe. I considered the same thing for my 2015 taxes, and found a number of websites citing the IRS that said that you cannot file separately unless you haven't lived together for at least a year /shrug.

If that's untrue, then I stand corrected.

OH I see now. I was looking up information for Roth IRA contributions. http://www.rothira.com/roth-ira-rules

My bad. I confused this with general tax returns.

First of all, you can file and your wife can file hers as long as you have the same address. However for the best results you should file jointly. If you don't file jointly the IO might think or have doubts about your marriage. File jointly is the best thing to do. Good luck

You misunderstand me. As long as you file marry and your spouse files marry, you don't have to file jointly as long as your both income tax return shows same address. However its best to file jointly.
