I am the USC and my husband has both Guatemalan and Italian citizenship. He has lived his whole life in guatemala, has never even been to Italy. But currently only has Italian passport, Guatemalan passport expired and has not been renewed. We will be doing DCF here in Guatemala, does it matter which citizenship/passport he uses for his application? Thanks so much!

(We are dragging our feet getting all paperwork done, little by little, because we are not sure when we will actually leave for the US)

Your husband will have to show proof that he can legally reside in Guatemala. This means either an Italian passport with a visa/residency permit, or evidence of Guatemalan citizenship. Best he gets his passport renewed. Will make things a lot easier for you in the long run.

It's amazing how many questions can be resolved with a 2 minute Google search...

So there is no benefit to apply with an Italian passport vs a Guatemalan?

He hasn't bothered with renewing the Guatemalan passport since he can travel everywhere with the Italian one. He has a Guatemalan birth certificate and a Guatemalan National ID which is also a proof of citizenship.

The Consulate will need his Guatemalan passport, with a validity of at least 6 months, to issue the visa sticker. He will get tracked as a "Guatemala" case at the NVC. The case number will start with GTM. So, the Consulate in Guatemala City can't interview him and then put the visa sticker in an Italian passport. Should be easy enough to renew with his DPI and expired passport.
