Dear all,

My boyfriend and I are new to the Visa process and we are looking for a way to both live in the USA as quickly as possible. I am hoping you can provide me some advice in regards to our situation. My boyfriend is Dutch, I am American. We have been in a relationship for 18 months and would like to marry. I am currently in the US, he is in the Netherlands. I am wondering if I went to the Netherlands to get married to him, then what is the process for getting him to the US? What forms should he file in the Netherlands and how long does the process usually take to get permission to come live and work in the US?

I am discouraged by the potential wait time of a K-1 visa, so I am wondering if marriage in the Netherlands would expedite the process so that we could live together more quickly. Please let me know if you need any other information.

Thank you for your time.

Spousal visa CR1 / IR1 takes about 8-12 months from filing petition I-130 to visa in hand.

See this chart for comparison.

no expediting, the process married would take around a year, the k1 less but then he would have to adjust status in the US

Thank you, Merrytooth. An additional question -- if we apply for the K-1 then could he come to the US on the VWP or the B-1 visa (for a longer stay) while we wait for the K-1 to be processed?

Yes, he can visit on VWP during the process.
