Mistake on my Ds260 form

I recently filled my d260 form and on the question were it says do you wish to be assigned a social security number i answered no.I mistakenly believed that social security means being the governments ward (i live under in a backward town under a rock) .I received my immigrant visa but will i still be able to apply for my ssn or i am barred as i have learn how necessary an ssn is.

You will automatically get an SSN, the box you ticked I think is just about the card I believe? In either case anyway, this just means you will have to go into an SSA office to apply for the card after you land rather than having one sent automatically to you.
