A relative of mine and his wife had same day N400 interviews some weeks ago. They both received verbal approvals that day. His wife recently received her Oath ceremony notification by mail. Problem is, he hasn't received his Oath details, even though the online status has been showing the following for some time:

*******************************

Oath Ceremony Notice Was Mailed

We scheduled your oath ceremony for Receipt Number NBC**********. We sent a notice with the date, time, and location of your oath ceremony to the address you gave us. Please follow the instructions in the notice.......

*******************************

He's afraid his letter got lost in the mail, and he missed\might miss his Oath. USCIS cust service reps repeat the same online wording and ask him to wait 30 days or something.

What if the letter is lost in the mail.. and he misses the Oath?

Has anyone experienced something similar to this?

If he misses the ceremony, he'll get a letter in the mail asking him to write back and explain why he missed the oath. If he replies within the time period specified in the letter, his oath will be rescheduled and a new letter will be mailed. If he doesn't reply in time, or if he misses the oath a second time, then his application to naturalize will be denied and he will have to reapply by filing a new N400.

Your post doesn't say if they were both received the ceremony notification on the same day. There's no guarantee that the letters were mailed at the same time or that the ceremonies will be on the same day (or even month).

Several people on here have stated that USCIS has agreed to fax a copy of the oath letter, but only if you call within 1 week of the ceremony. I don't think this is an official policy, but it happens frequently enough that there's probably some guidance to this effect to the people on the phone.

Your relative may have been scheduled for a later ceremony than his wife. My advice would be for him to call (with a fax number ready) when it's less than a week from the wife's scheduled ceremony. Alternatively, if there's enough time, he can schedule an Infopass appointment for a few days before the ceremony date.

I don't have all their online status details, I just jotted down what they relayed to me. I suggested he give a few days for the notification to arrive in the mail. His wife's Oath is coming up in a couple of weeks; he will accompany her and possibly try to ask his way around the status of his oath while there.

I will pass along your advice about the fax thing. In addition, he submitted the e-request online inquiry.

Thanks for the information about what happens following an inadvertent oath miss. Much appreciated!

Your friend needs to call the USCIS main line on Monday and firmly request to speak to a Tier 2 officer. They can tell him when his oath has been scheduled.

He can also ask them if he needs the oath notice to attend the ceremony in the event that he does not receive it in time. My guess is yes, because there is a questionnaire on the back that the applicant has to answer but they may have extra forms at the ceremony for people in his situation.

Do not delay. Call on Monday and politely insist on speaking to a tier 2 officer. They can help him. I called and got the date, time and location of my oath ceremony before I received the notice in the mail.
