but i think the majority of racial issues we have today, in america, are because we have institutionally rampant slavery followed up with institutionally rampant racism - which is still around today. i either live in a racist hell hole or a number of white people aren't being very forth coming with how whites talk about black people when they think no one who might disagree is listening (or in the grocery line, the water cooler..). seems like the majority of vj doesn't experience this sort of thing on a daily basis.

I think you live in a racist hell hole :)

What folks don't get is, all we want is to be treated like everyone else, no better or worse.

I wish that was true though but it's not always the case. Some seem to want special treatment. Affirmative action anyone? Treat you the same as everyone? I have no problem with that. You're no different than me.

Here's my issue with Affirmative Action. By having it active, it means we have a problem with hiring minorities. But without it, many qualified minorities wouldn't have made it to where they are today. There's tons of research showing that people don't always hire on merit. Having qualifications out the yazoo doesn't always counter having a "ethnic" sounding name. I know people personally that have to use their middle names just to make it to the interview stage, and they have a master's degrees and tons of experience.

AA basically helped more white women obtain employment than any other class of person.

http://ideas.time.com/2013/06/17/affirmative-action-has-helped-white-women-more-than-anyone/

While people of color, individually and as groups, have been helped by affirmative action in the subsequent years, data and studies suggest women — white women in particular — have benefited disproportionately. According toone study, in 1995, 6 million women, the majority of whom were white, had jobs they wouldn’t have otherwise held but for affirmative action.

When we learn to judge based on actions instead of skin color, sex, or religion, then we can get rid of it.
