Hi,

My Wife and I are eligible for applying for US Citizenship. Both of us are having Green Card. We are planning to move back to India soon as have Business over there.
Our kids are Citizens. We are just wondering what are the pros and cons of taking Citizenship for both of us versus taking only for my wife and me applying for Green Card re-enty permit for 2 years.
We have some farmlands in India and may buy some more in the future.

Reason for taking Citizenship for Wife only is to be on the safe side to be on the safe side if something does not work. Please help us with pros and cons of our decision including any benefits in taxes and such.
Appreciate your help a lot.

Thanks,

Sam.

As citizens or LPR's you are required to file US tax returns on worldwide income. So there is no advantage there.

I don't think India allows dual citizenship, so since you two have ties to India, you may want to consider if you want to pursue US citizenship. Since you two may want to either neither do citizenship or just your wife do citizenship. I think it's best for your wife to become citizen just in case she needs to travel to the US or to another country faster.

I'm a 'just-in-case' person, so I look at a lot of secondary and tertiary plans. For example, you never know if you end up in a situation where you can't come back to the US to keep your LPR status.

But one Indian citizen and one American citizen in your marriage will probably give you two the flexibility you need. She might be able to enter India easier with your citizenship if she needs to renounce her Indian citizenship.

why don't you become USC and get a OCI card. you can do whatever you are doing in India without loosing your status here. of course you will have to pay taxes here in any case.
