Hello,

I am about to embark on the form that is the DS-160. When I was looking at the sample form it had a question on country of birth and country of origin (nationality). I was born in Trinidad, but moved to Canada when I was ten months. I reside and am a citizen of Canada. Do I put "Canada" or "Trinidad" as the answer to country of origin (nationality)?

Thanks

Hi!!

If your Birth certificate is from Trinidad, Put Trinidad.

Hmmm I thought that at first too but then when why would they also ask for country of birth? If origin/nationality implies country of birth, why ask both questions since the two questions would never have a different answer? I wonder if anyone who was born in a different country than the one they live in now (as citizens) put their country of citizenship?

Thanks for your reply. I'm still not convinced though. They also ask do you have any other nationalities, which means if nationality/origin (they are the same according to the way the question is written) meant your country of birth, how could you be born in two different countries? I have put Canada as one nationality and Trinidad as a secondary nationality. Hopefully that works.

I think it's confusing because the dictionary definition of origin implies where you started from, but perhaps the legal definition of origin is different.

If you google DS-160 and nationality you'll find this answer: "The name of the country should be the name that is currently in use for the place you were born".

You're born in Trinidad therefor your nationality doesn't change.

Citizenship and nationality are two completly differen things. Nationality is what you're born as and citizenship is something you gain.

"In simple words, nationality can be applied to the country where an individual was born. Then what does citizenship stands for? It is a legal status, which means that an individual has been registered with the government in some country.

I think it is different in England. If you have a British citizenship you are classified as British nationals.

No, you have 6 crazy different types of citizenship and British national is for British people overseas, I'm assuming they're from some British colony.

Not really relevant for the OP.

Born in India, NZ Citizen, my nationality is New Zealander.

Says so on my passport, and it's how I've filled in every travel form since I became a citizen.
