Why does it make you laugh? America is not like other countries.

All countries are not equal. What's ok for one country is not ok for another.

If America has nuclear weapons, does it mean that everyone else should be allowed to have them as well?

No.

Their country, their rules.

And yeah, it makes me laugh too because of the sense of entitlement that many people feel just because they're American. US citizenship doesn't give someone the right to bypass another country's rules and regulations.

We're talking about entry requirements, not nuclear weapons.

Apples and automobiles! Hey they both start with "a"!

I'd have to agree, their rules in their country...I'm ok with it as I would expect other countries to be ok with our policies and actions on OUR borders (Mexico anyone?)....

I do think it is messed up going back 30+ years!

My job required my life history going back 10 years on of my former coworkers (the father of the kid that reported the rape/murder in Iraq, some of you may remember me posting that I knew both the kid who reported it and his father) was questioned about a pot conviction in 1971...well beyond the 10 years they requested!

To each their own, I was very fortunate to not been caught doing what I did in my youth! *whew*

No.

I've heard of strong forms of American exceptionalism, but never one that implied that we had the jurisdiction to determine another country's immigration policies.

Put down the analogies before you hurt yourself with a mixed metaphor.

Apples and oranges.

As Americans, we have rights in our country, but those rights do not extend to bypassing whatever laws of the country we wish to visit. So if Canada says one has to do xyz in order to go....then that's what should be done, and being 'American' doesn't mean we don't have to do it. :D

How funny, I wrote out my reply immediately after reading Mawilson's post & didn't read yours before writing mine.
