Hello everyone. My name is Adam and I'm new here. First off I'd like to apologize if this topic has been covered (I'm sure it has) but I'm in a bit of a time crunch and I couldn't find the search option.

Here's my deal at the moment. I'm putting together all my documents to bring over my fiance from China. Our interview date is March 27th. Anyways I'm running down my laundry list of things to do and I'm at a part where I need copies of my passport notarized. My friend tells me that any bank or public notary should be able to do it and I've also read on this site that this is how the process is supposed to go.

Problem: I've went to my bank earlier today and told them what I was doing and what I needed done and they kind of gave me this blank face and said they've never done that before and had no idea how to and that they couldn't help me. I decided to call the county clerk's office to speak to a public notary. I went in there later in the afternoon and they basically said the same thing. That they had no idea how and why to notarize a passport. I told them that I needed copies of every filled passport page and have it notarized. Am I doing anything wrong or what can I tell them when I try again tommorow? Thanks for any help.

You don't have to have the passport notarized. You need only the copies of the passport pages. I used my birth certificate, but some have said on here they only sent pages that contained official documentation....everything except the blank pages.

Patience is required for this process.

I've never heard of a passport being notarized. Is this a requirement from the embassy in China? I had to notarize my I-134 but not my passport.

I'm not sure if its specific to China since this if my first and hopefully my last time I have to do this. Any advice on what to tell the notary if by some chance they still give me a clueless look when I ask them to notarize my passport pages? And what should I tell them if they ask why they are notarizing it. I told them last time it was for a K1 visa application and they were kind of stumped.

I find it unlikely that your passport needs to be notarized. A passport is already an international document, accepted by countries around the world. Also, a notary is usually witnessing a signature, and you are not going to sign your passport. What MAY be necessary, however, is a notarized TRANSLATION of your passport, which would probably have to be done in China. In this case the notary is witnessing the signature of the translator attesting to the accuracy of the translation.
