Name Change and SSC

Hello VJ..

Finally, we're married after a year long engagement. Now that we're married and have the marriage certificate, how and/or where does my wife go the change her legal name? Does she put her married name on the Social Security Application? Or is there another application for that?

About the legal name changing. I'm pretty sure it depends on the state but most of the states have the common immigration policy. So according to Missouri state I should apply for AOS along with EAD and AP. When my EAD and AP are approved I get an ID on my new family name. This ID (I-766) gives me the right to apply for SSN replacement.

definitely doesn't apply to Missouri and Idaho, maybe other states are not that picky

yeah, I thought it will be like this. just show up with your marriage license and you are free to apply for ssn on my new family name. But the S.security officer said I should apply first for AOS and come back again when I'll have approved EAD and AP card. My friend in Idaho, who is on the same timeline with me got the same response.

It causes now bunch of inconveniences such as impossible to make a joint bank account and driver's licences on the new family name. sad

I did have.

applied right the next week after I came to the states

The problem with getting SSN in married name is that it doesn't match I-94's name. Although there's no need for "legal name change" as marriage certificate is the only document required to prove that you changed your name to get Ssn you normally need a document in your married name like GC or EAD that proves you jave right to receive SSN.

I have SSN given that I am a Residency of Florida. I returned home for my country of birth making visit in and out of the US.

I am now married, tried to update my SSN records. To my surprised I was told that I will have to get my approval status from USCIS. Prior them being able to make correction.

I attempted to source on line and telephone was unable to gain info.

Can one guide me as to what I should do in order to get this rectify, as I will like to return with my family to reside permanently and work.
