Its' time to file taxes and my hubby needs to apply for an ITIN so that we can file jointly. My question is where can I send him to get a copy of his passport notarized? Also thoes he need to make a copy of every page on his passport or just the first part that has all the information on it? Does he need to take copy in color or black and white and is he supposed ot make the copy or does the person that will view and verify the document provide the copy?

Town Hall is usually good, also Fed Ex usually has a notary. I took my tax return and id right to the IRS Tax help center and they just verified the documents there.

I believe they only need the page with the phono/info on it. At least that is what the IRS clerk took a copy of from mine.

I'm sure he can bring a copy and the original and that would be fine.

I'm not sure what the other comment is about... This is what I've gathered from extensive reading on the official IRS website.

Make a copy of the photo page in black and white, have a public official (like a practicing doctor, teacher, lawyer, etc) sign it attesting to it being a true copy. Send it to the Legalisation office at the Foreign & Commonwealth Office. Here's a link about it - http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front?pagena...d=1007029391440 . It costs £19 and be sure to include the completed payment form.

Alternatively, you could go to the US embassy in London, bring the passport and the copy, and have a US official notarise it.

The passport copy must either have an apostille attached or being notarised by a US official.

I don't know about for this purpose so this info may be right off with regards to the ITIN, but I needed my passport notarized for the court in Nevada for the annulment of my first marriage.

I asked the court about the notary being in the UK and was told it was okay to use any notary. I called a few solicitors' offices close to where I was living, found one with a notary on staff and took my passport along. I did have to pay (I think about 30 pounds?) he took the photocopies, stamped and notarized and gave them to me (he did three copies for the same price, in case I needed more.)

Permanent Resident Since 01/03/2007

N-400 application mailed 3/20/17

Credit card charged 3/25/17

NOA 3/31/17

Yeah, I found out it's different for applying for the ITIN because the IRS wants an apostille to be attached. It's something to do with the Hague Convention, and only the place at link I gave above can do it in England, or a US official at the embassy.
