HI everyone,

My husband arrived last Tuesday to the US. We wanted to apply for his SSN but the employee at the local SSA office told us we needed the I-94 which is still not available online. How long does that usually take to appear?

The SSN clerk is incorrect. The visa foil, plus the stamp from the point-of-entry, is proof that your husband is eligible to apply for a Social Security Number. The visa foil and the POE stamp is the equivalent of the I-551. IR-1/CR-1 visas do NOT have an I-94.

Go back and ask to speak with a supervisor.

Print out this page and take it with you: http://www.ssa.gov/ssnvisa/Handout_11_1.html

You must be firm, but polite if you are challenged. Good luck!

That is very good to know! I thought I had read on VJ somewhere about the I-94 and I was concerned that it wasn't available yet. He was telling us that we had to wait at least 10 days for my husband to even be in the system, which I thought made sense given that everything takes forever concerning the visa process. Thanks again, I'll try!
