Hello,

I'm American and just married a Japanese man last December. We got married in the US but live in Japan. We are talking about moving to Hawaii in the next couple of years, so we need to apply for his visa. I don't think we can do direct consular filing here, so I think that will slow down the process, right? If we want to move in April 2017, when and how should I start the process?

Also, I was wondering if we have to apply for a green card right away, or is there a shorter term option that he would still be able to get a job with? Living in Hawaii is something we want to try out while we are still young and free of responsibility, but we realize we might need to come back to Japan if we can't make it there. So I feel like getting a green card when we are not even sure if we will reside there permanently is a waste. Thoughts? I appreciate any advice you can give me.

If you found an Employer who was willing to sponsor a work visa that could be an option.
