Ok so I've only just seen this bit in the, K1 a complete guide, post

FYI: You do not have a national ID number. Tick "does not apply".

Ok so I just assumed they were asking for a number or reference number that would relate to you an only you. So me being me, I just thought well in a way that could be my NI number, so I put that in. Form didn't complain so didn't think anymore of it and just sent it off! Now I'm reading this and realise I was wrong.

Will this be a problem??? Is it easily rectified???

I was going to put my NI number in and happened to check against the guide and removed it. You should be able to explain when you get there. I do actually think that it should be in there as most countries have some sort of national identity number (USA has Social Security, we have NI ...) so I don't think it is wrong, just perhaps not necessary.

Yeah! This is exactly what I was thinking. I'm sure it even said on the form in the info bit at the side, something like, this is like the U.S. SSN.

Ah well. I guess I'll just have to explain that at the interview.

Won't that be a bit of a ball ache though? And wouldn't it confuse things at their end? If I've done more than one?

Oh ok!! That's fine then. I'll just do another one.

I literally just found this on the US London Embassy website

http://london.usembassy.gov/ds160_faqs.html#ds160_013

Is the National Identification Number the same as my national insurance number?

No. UK citizens do not have one. You should mark this “Does not apply”

Wish I'd seen this before. No worries, I'll just do it again this evening.

I put in my UK NI number, and I had no problems at all. Had my interview on Friday and I was approved.

The American people who process this will know whether to use it or ignore it.

I really don't think it's an issue. It would be more likely to be asked for at the interview if it was required, than would be to cause an issue if you provide it and it's not needed. I did not put mine in. If they want it, I know it and have my NI card.

If you feel more comfortable, do as Pilot suggested and redo the form and take the new confirmation page. The embassy tells you on the website to do this if you submit it with an error.

I stand by my view however that this is not a mistake; it's simply open to interpretation by the applicant. It's a non issue. :)

It is a mistake that has no consequences. Don't worry about it. A number or not is of no relevance to the visa or the interview. If you put the wrong name for yourself or got a new passport number like Pilot (something important), then do it over.

It wasn't mentioned.

When you think about it whoever processes these is going to know whether Brits need it or not. If they don't need that info, they will ignore it. I imagine many Brits put in their NI number there, as it makes sense to do that.
