W-8Ben or W9?

Hi, can anyone confirm which form I need to fill in?

Day after I got here, I opened a ( non resident) account at Wells Fargo with my Cdn passport. A week or so, I got my SSN then called the bank to provide this information. I have now received a letter from Wells Fargo asking me to fill in W-8Ben or W9 form. I am thinking the W-8Ben but then I noticed on the W9 form, my bank account number is prefilled while on the W-8Ben, it is not.

I am not sure which one I am to do and AOS/EAD is still to be done .

Thanking you in advance.

Valerie

Once you get an SSN you do a W9. You would have needed the W8Ben before you had an ITIN or SSN.

HI NLR, are you saying that I should have done W8BEN at the time I opened the bank account and now that I have a SSN, I do a W9?

At this moment , it seems to be backwards.... I opened account without SSN and did not do any form. Then a week or so , I got my SSN ; called the bank and provided that info - still did not fill in any form. NOW I am being asked about the forms.

If the 1st line/statement is true, then in theory the bank ( US) needs to have 2 forms from me, no? So following that theory, I can submit to them both forms,no? :-)

ps: before I posted the above, I sent off an email to the banker and she replied with W8 but you who have been through this says W9. So confused.

Thanks.

i used the w8ben to open my us account and be added to my husband's account. Then both Banks requested a w9 when i wanted to add my ssn to the account.
