Two key black political leaders in South Carolina ... said Tuesday they are supporting Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's bid for the Democratic presidential nomination.

State Sens. Robert Ford and Darrell Jackson told The Associated Press they believe Clinton is the only Democrat who can win the presidency. ... Ford said Obama winning the primary would drag down the rest of the party.

"Then everybody else on the ballot is doomed," Ford said. "Every Democratic candidate running on that ticket would lose because he's black and he's at the top of the ticket - we'd lose the House, the Senate and the governors and everything."

[...]

Support from black voters is key in South Carolina, where 49 percent of the Democratic presidential primary vote came from blacks in 2004.

"I think that Senator Ford's comments were reprehensible," said Illinois Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. "I believe Democratic prospects would soar, not slump."

[...]

"If I caused anybody - including myself - any pain about the comments I made earlier, then I want to apologize to myself and to Senator Obama and any of his supporters," Ford said.

Isn't this part of the process? The different candidates get endorsements and attack each other through them. That's always been the process.

I say put all of the candidates in an arena, give them weapons (swords, knives, pitchforks, etc) and let them battle it out on Pay-Per-View. Whichever candidate wins, becomes president. Sure, it may not be the democratic way, but it's a lot more entertaining... B)

And whoever remains standing will atleast be 'battle tested'!

It's too early to be fighting...they should be out there spreading their message - their plans for the future and all that good stuff.

You have a political field crowded with good Dem candidates for an election cycle that is almost guaranteed to produce a Democratic president. How could they not fight?

Ah but Colber(t) is a Republican...or don't you watch his show?

I love the Colber(t) Repor(t)

But Colbert has made his decision already. I just wish I could remember how he phrased it!

and the show before...Democrat leaning Daily Show.

I have noticed a pattern in the US. A lot of black people seem to vote for people just because they are black. There is so much proof of it out there.. There seems to be one group in this country who vocally now uses the race card to get ahead, at their convenience, yet ironically and hypocritically condemns racism.. I am sick of hearing about the black vote. what about the other 270 million people who are not black. Or are they suggesting they are better and more important than every other American..

Anyone heard of Marion Barry the previous mayor of DC. I read up on him the other day. What a bloody joke.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I'm not sure that's true.

As far as Obama goes - I think the media has been propagating a perception (especially with regards to the reporting of that specific story) that there's something wrong if people in that community choose to vote for someone other than him. The assumption that voter preferences are (or should be) driven by race is a little insulting.

People seem to voice these views quite openly through various mediums.. I by no means am saying every African-American does this but it seems to be the thing amongst poorer black Americans.. I am sure most people who are wise and worldly will base their opinions on the candidate and not what they look like or what they can do for x culture.. I think very few if any Caucasians will vote for a candidate solely because they are white..

I predict many outraged democrats will not even vote. Are Tuesdays a big pot smoking day?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt
