Consular appointment date?

Do you get an assigned date for the consular interview or do you get to pick the date? If you get it assigned is it possible to ask for a later date?

I'm asking this because we (My Fiancee and I) already had a trip planned thinking the process would take a lot longer, but it's taken 7 weeks from the day the CSC received it to the consulate receiving it.

We don't really want to cancel this trip because I don't get the money back for the tickets ($1,400AUD).

I paid the fee online today, which is the same day they notified us of them receiving it. So I'm thinking it won't be too long before they contact me again.

The interview date is assigned as you receive Packet 3 and 4 altogether in an email from the Sydney consulate. You can ask for a later date by emailing them on support-australia@ustraveldocs.com
