I just returned from Montreal having been approved for my immigration visa. Yay, it's done and now I can move on.

There is an option on the DS-260 form that offers the assigning of a social security number which I opted for and my question is does anyone know how long this takes? Is it delivered to me when they courier my passport or is it a long process? I know I can get a number right away if I go in person. If I've requested on one my DS-260 and I don't get one by the time I cross the border what will be the consequences of going to an office and applying for one?

80-90% of the time it doesn't happen. So you can choose to wait the 2 weeks, which is normally how long the CBP take to mail anything to anyone. The SSA may or may not allow you to get one right away because your info won't be on file yet.

For as long as I have been on VJ, some get get it, some do not. I was 1 that did not! You can go to the local SSN office anytime, but it takes time for you to get into the system. they Recommend 10 Business days (2 weeks). Your best to download an application http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/ fill it out and bring the required ID. So when you get to the window, and they say yep ur in the system, but no SSn has been issued and they say u need to fill out an application...you hand over the already filled out application, saving u time!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied,that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

2013-01-07: AOS bills invoiced and paid & OPTIN for EP accepted for each of us

2013-01-08: IV bill invoiced & paid (kids' only)
2013-01-09: IV bill appears as paid (kids' only)
2013-01-09: IV Package emailed & DS-260 submitted online (kids only)
