Canadian passport to expire during AOS

My wife and I are going through the AOS process, but her passport will expire in August. Is there a way to renew this passport while she's still in the states?

Renew it now and send it to the embassy.

Canadian embassy should renew ut, I don't know how long it will take. But passport being expired during AOS won't affect the decision. But she will need it to travel when she gets the green card

I recently had to renew my passport while figuring out ROC - basically I had to mail off the old passport with the application which was pretty scary as it left me without a passport entirely. However, apparently I filled all the forms out and included everything correctly because I got the new one in the mail about a month and a half later. The website for Passport Service Canada usually has a current processing time and back in January/February it was 30 business days (not including time there and back). If her passport expires in August this gives you plenty of time to get it back.

Some things to consider--

Ask for your old passport to be returned just in case - it has the visa in it. They'll just hole punch it or cut off a corner to make it invalid but you can still see the visa.

When mailing in the application, make sure you get international tracking. USPS charges a ridiculous sum. I think it cost me $35 to mail my application in with tracking but there was NO way I wanted it to get lost in the mail or be unsure where it was.

Best of luck!

That's wrong for Canadians in the USA.

Diplomatic missions will only issue emergency passports. However, they can help you fill your application correctly or do a passport retention, if needed.

The website states "

  • is in the same name as your current application;"

Now that she's moved to the US and we've gotten married her name has changed. Does anyone know how to handle that?

Is there any reason she would travel back to Canada before then? It would be easier to do the name-change in an actual Passport Canada office in-person perhaps? I know that's why I did and it was less stressful to me than mailing everything. I was also still IN Canada after I got married so I realize it's different.

Yeah like a previous poster said, once your name is changed you can't just renew your passport. You have to apply for an entirely new one so unfortunately it's a little more complicated.

We also have to pay a higher fee (more than $100 more than if we were living in Canada) since we are not residents for a new passport. It was pricey but I went for the 10 year option just to avoid the hassle again for a long time.
