When applying for a K-1 visa what are the exceptions for not meeting in person eventhough there is an ongoing relationship?

Or is there a requirement to have met before applying for this K-1 visa?

Any help with this would be so much appreciated.

There is virtually no viable option for claiming exception to the having met in person rule for K-1. Before you file, you will want to buy a plane ticket and go see you significant other.

There are reasons which one could use to get around this rule, but getting USCIS to waive this requirement is quite difficult.

I have really never heard of the waiver being given for anyone not having met within the 2 years. I think, if you can, you should try to meet before you file. Good Luck whatever you do!

I agree with the others. I don't know your circumstances, but from what I've heard is that it is extremely difficult to get a waiver for the requirement of having met in person.

I would recommend that you meet your fiancee first before you file. There is no way you can get approved if you didnt meet the meeting requirement like what happened to us. Although my fiance-now-my husband reappealed in June 2005, its still pending. Its good we just redid the I129F all over again coz if we waited for the decision on the appeal,we would get too old. There is no way USCIS will approve you eventhough you give them any reason, that just what I think. Goodluck to you.

There are only 2 exceptions that may be accepted by USCIS, traveling to see your fiance(e) would pose an extreme hardship, or cultural or social practices prohibited meeting.

From the I-129F instructions:

7. What Documents Do You Need to Prove That You Can Legally Marry?

Provide copies of evidence that you and your fiancé(e) have personally met within the last two years; or if you have never met within the last two years, provide a detailed explanation and evidence of the extreme hardship or customary, cultural or social practices that have prohibited your meeting.

I would add that saying visiting would be too expensive does not qualify as "extreme hardship" too. So don't try using that as the reason for granting an exception.

Correct, extreme hardship means that you have a medical condition that would prevent you from traveling, and getting a visitors visa to the USA is nearly impossible for the foreign fiance(e)
