I agree on not wanting an aristocracy, but Hillary's demonstrable superiority over either Edwards or Obama or Clark in terms of her knowledge of theissues and general wonkiness is mind-boggling. It would be a bad idea to say no to her just because she's a Clinton. She's a vastly superior candidate.

As for triangulation, it worked for Bill. He was a good president for the middle class, he wasn't down with any of the populist ####### that people like Edwards like to engage in. I don't get the sense that HRC is into that either, and I respect that. Talk to me like I'm a person, don't throw me a damn pity party.

Guiliani doesn't have a chance in hell

I wouldn't be so sure about hat ;)

If he's on the ballot, he gets my vote. End of story. But the point I think is, he isn't going to get on the ballot. I mean, they destroyed McCain in the primaries cuz he wasn't down with the religious right, can you imagine what they will do to a New Yorker who had a gay roomate, 2 or 3 divorces and who has photos in drag? These things shouldn't matter but the GOP "base" in old Dixie is still stuck in the 1800s and to them it does.

Guiliani would do well in the general, but he's not going to make it through the primary, is what I mean, LisaD, for all the reasons Gupt mentions. Which is a shame, because I think the guy would make a very competent President.

HRC doesn't have the pity party problem, but she does have the kneejerk polling thing. Take the video game flap a year or so ago; transparent way to look good on family values at the expense of free speech, and an ignorant argument to boot. Plus, it took her a damned long time to acknowledge publicly that Iraq was a mistake --- like, late 2006. I want someone ballsy enough not to get us involved in another dumb war, not someone who is crippled by a need to look ballsy. Bill was charismatic enough to get away with it. I'm not sure she is.

But it's early yet. I'm leaning Obama very strongly, but the man needs to give us some meat to go with that pretty smile of his.

Eh I'm undecided....with the state of the GOP and prevailing opinion especially with the slaughter in the last elections, I think they might want to minimize losses at this point, and that might even be to support a candidate with the best chance of keeping a Republican in the White House.

And Rudy would get my vote any day of the week. Gotta have an Italian in the White House ;)

I can't wait til we find out what's wrong with Obama.

The Prime Minister of Australia believes al-Qaeda is praying for an Obama victory.

In a strongly worded foray into US politics today, Mr Howard said an Obama victory in the presidential election would be disastrous for the war on terrorism.

"I think he's wrong. I think that will just encourage those who want to completely destabilise and destroy Iraq, and create chaos and a victory for the terrorists to hang on and hope for an Obama victory," Mr Howard said on Channel 9.

"If I were running al-Qaeda in Iraq, I would put a circle around March 2008 and be praying as many times as possible for a victory not only for Obama but also for the Democrats."

And in other news, has the Obama campaign made its first mistake? Or is this on purpose because what he's really after is the VP spot?

Sen. Barack Obama is skipping a forum for Democratic presidential candidates in Nevada this month - his first opportunity to share a platform with his rivals for the 2008 nomination.

Seven other announced or expected Democratic candidates, including front-runner Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, have told organizers they will participate in the Feb. 21 forum in Carson City, Nev. It's the first such candidates forum of the 2008 presidential campaign.

Obama, who is scheduled to be in southern Nevada the same week, couldn't work the forum into his itinerary...

Hehehe that guy is such a loser... :waits for Infidel to show up and defend Howard and tell us how much the US could stand to learn from a 1st world nation like Australia:

I agree, the comment is ridiculous. Although I prefer Hillary's stand on the Iraq issue. Much more realistic. Obama and Edwards have populist stands on the issue that appeal to people on an emotional level. Hillary is too cerebral to fall to that level.

Excerpts from an interesting column on Obama. Written by Chris Stevenson for Black Star News, supposedly "New York’s favorite Pan-African weekly investigative newspaper".

No I didn’t buy Obama’s book, "The Audacity of Hope." I glanced through it briefly at a local book store and determined that I read my last children’s book back in grade school. To tell you the truth I can’t remember if it was “Peanuts” or “The Cat in the Hat.”

[...]

Many blacks fear Obama’s lack of any significant attachment to their community won’t result in the “Funky President” that James Brown once sang about, but instead a fluffy president.

Personally I don’t want fluff in the Oval office, after all the damage that Bush caused, what the country needs is battle-tested. That is Hillary Clinton. She’s got the issues, she’s got the bank, and she’s got one hell of a head start. We still have yet to see what else is coming from the Republicans, pitting young Obama against the unpredictable Giuliani or cunning Condoleezza Rice—don’t believe she can’t enter the fray late, so as to avoid media scrutiny between Fall ’07-Spring ’08—may hurt the dems.

While Obama doesn’t need direct connections to Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson in order to win in ’08 ... he’s not going to get away with just searching for “universal” issues. He needs that black vote.

At some point he’s going to have to snuff out that "Newport" and mention our issues; police brutality, racial disparities in education, and jobs. He doesn’t have to pump the fist, wear a leather jacket and shades, just give us a Shout Out! For now this cat may not be ready to wear that hat, but months down the line, he’ll make an interesting Vice Presidential choice.
