How do you know if something is happening at various stages of the Application process?

Does the USCIS send email notices each time something happens?

No. You can sign up at the USCIS site for updates on your case once you have your case number - U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services - My Case Status

The only notices you will/can receive:

1. NOA1 - Notice of Approval 1 - This is typically a few weeks after you submit the I-129F. This states they received and accepted your petition and will process it at some point.

2. RFE - Request for evidence - you can receive this at any point in the process. It means USCIS needs information from you.

3. NOA2 - Notice of Approval 2 -Once your I-129F is approved this is your approval notice. It usually comes a week or two after your approval happens.

There are more notices as the process goes on but the ones above are the only ones sent by USCIS.

You will receive updates by a few ways:

1. Your original I-129F - the form you can fill out to receive text/email updates is only good for the NOA1. This will tell you when USCIS accepted your petition.

2. Once your petition has been accepted and you are provided a case number you will not receive updates any longer from that form. You need to sign up to the above site for further email or text notifications.

3. At all points USCIS will also send you a paper copy.

The updates on the site will be the same - years ago you could see every time your file is touched but now you only receive the same updates as above. It is faster though - typically you can access the updated status on the site a week or more before you would receive the letter. This is especially helpful at the NOA2 stage when you may want to pre-book a medical exam, order certificates, etc.
