So ahmed was still worried about the fact that the interview officer guy had originally kept this passport but then returned it to him when ahmed went back for his original documents, so he made me ask the embassy what the deal was with the passports...

And the reply...

Dear Madam,

Thank you for your email message.

We recently started returning passports to applicants as per instructions from the Visa Chief. Once the case is ready for issuance, we will contact the applicant to send his passport.

Regards,

Consular Staff

I wouldn't bother emailing the consulate at this point. Bother DOS for awhile. I did like the lady I talked to today. She laughed when she tried to pronounce Moh's last name. Then asked if his name was common. I said, first name, yes..last name, not so much. I asked, do you check the entire name together? She laughed and said, yes. I laughed and said, oh good because if you just check his first name I'll be waiting until next year. She said it just seems to be a common name so that's the hold up...nothing derogatory on the case. Phew!

I forget where I read this before and if I have time I'll dig it up. I was worried about how they do the name check and I found that they actually mix the name around a bit to see different combos and the different hits they get.
