Dear All

I'm sure this is a pretty familiar story.................

I met a girl from Texas whilst on vacation at Christmas. Until February 13 we spoke every day. I then flew to Dallas and took her out for a meal on Valentine's Day. Then spent a further 2 weeks with her.

This is what I would "like to do" :

(a) Move to the U.S. for 6-9 months and spend some quality time with my "new" girlfriend.

(B) Work on a sales only commission basis during that period.

I have an "income" of $2500 per month so I can just about afford to support myself (this expires in December 2006).

On top of that I have modest savings of $50,000.

This means I could afford to rent somewhere and "date" for period of time to find out "if" we want to get married.

If it doesn't work out I can come home.

We should be able to do that shouldn't we?

I've researched the H1B visa route - not really going to happen. Plus I've looked into the L1-A visa - I have a business that is part owned by U.S. company - but both business are relatively small.

Any ideas ?????????????????

The idea of marriage, eventually, sounds good BUT I have only known her for 2 1/2 weeks. That said I am willing to "up sticks" and try living there for a while.

Thanks

Paul

hey paul,

i was in a similar situation with my boyfriend. he was already here on a J1 visa when we fell in love. we looked into all the possibilities as well and marriage was the only thing that worked in our situaion. Now with you, i would try to either get a J1 visa and then you can work here for 18 months. you can also try and get a student visa. those are not hard to get but can be expensice and i dont know if you already have an education or not. i am also not sure what it takes to get a J1 visa. what country are you from by the way?

thats all the advice i can give!!! hope it helped alittle.

Well you could apply for a K1 like the rest of us, lol. It would mean 6 months or more away from your girl, but in the end you shall be with her.

Or try a J1 visa as stated below.

Good luck

Student Visa may be a great option for you! You are not too old :P

& you have the financial resources to qualify!

Just my 2 cents!

IK HOU VAN JOU, MARK

Take a large, almost round, rotating sphere about 8000 miles in diameter, surround it with a murky, viscous atmosphere of gases mixed with water vapor, tilt its axis so it wobbles back and forth with respect to a source of heat and light, freeze it at both ends and roast it in the middle, cover most of its surface with liquid that constantly feeds vapor into the atmosphere as the sphere tosses billions of gallons up and down to the rhythmic pulling of a captive satellite and the sun. Then try to predict the conditions of that atmosphere over a small area within a 5 mile radius for a period of one to five days in advance!

I'm from the U.K.

I really didn't think it would be so difficult working in the U.S.

I don't have a criminal record, I'm fit & healthy and can support myself financially.

Oh, and I'm a nice guy too!

Just as I/USC had no basis for moving to the UK before marrying a UKC, you have no basis for entering the US to live & work. Even though our countries are close, the rules are quite strict---we can visit each other, but not stay.

If you're not ready to do this based on marriage (a wise choice) you'll just have to get creative. There's no 'living together' visa, and very few casual work visas. Do some searching online and I'm sure you'll find something.

You can come here for visits ... before I got married my husband did that multiple times and we "lived" together for the duration of his visit. From the UK you can visit for 90 days on visa waiver provided you have a machine readable passport. If you do not have machine readable or wish to stay longer than 90 days at a time you can get a visitors visa. This will not allow you to work within the US however.

My fiancee (now my wife) came to stay with me for 3 months at the end of last year. That worked very well for us, as evidenced by our marriage. You could try doing the same thing, or, as suggested, you could apply for a B-1 visa and stay for up to 6 months. In neither case can you work here.

Best of luck,

Ditto - you CANNOT work in the US unlesss you have the correct visa allowing you to do - anything else is illegal and once they catch up with you they'll deport you and then ban you from re-entry - possibly forever.

I understand you not wanting to go the K1 route as right now you're not thinking of marriage / and are engaged (and this is the SOLE reason a K1 is issued).

You can use the VWP to visit (but NOT work, under any circumstances) as someone else said for up to 90 days which is a pretty fair amount of time that you can spend with your girl and get to know her.

Also VWP is easy to get if you have no convictions or previous entry refusals, but if you abuse it by overusing it or trying to work you won't be allowed to use a VWP in future even if you escape a ban on entering the country.

Good luck with it :)

I'm having trouble with the defintion of "work".

I've read that the VWP can be used for business travellers to hold meetings.

Now, if I have meetings to introduce a U.S. company and product BUT never receive any payment does that count as "work" ?
