Man, I am so out. And I feel like so old right now...
ah come on. you and erekose can get that free health care you two always want. and steven can join up with you.
Nah, that's quite alright. I rather pay for it and continue to live a little...
i figure some would rather it be free instead of going and earning it
Hate to burst your bubble, pal, but unlike many others, I wasn't born free.

I fought for and earned my freedom.

at what, 10 years old? that's when the wall came down.

ah come on, join up. get that health care you always wanted ;)

Come on, now. You can do the math. Had I been 10 years old when the wall came down, then I would be 27 today. I responded to your comment that one can join up as long as one is younger than 38 that I am so out. That does suggest, then, that I am not younger than 38, no? I was actually in my 20's when we took the Wall down. That was a little over 17 years ago ;)

Statement from the Selective Service System, right on their homepage:

NO DRAFT ON HORIZON!

Currently there is a flurry of newspaper articles about Selective Service planning to conduct an exercise of its field structure in 2009. However, the public should not be alarmed. No draft for the military is about to be reinstated. Rather, Selective Service is planning to test its policies, plans and procedures as it has done routinely over the years if resources are available. Given the decline in agency funding, this exercise may be postponed again as it has been in the past. As always, Selective Service continues to do its job of being ready to conduct a draft and to manage a program for civilian alternative service for men classified as conscientious objectors when directed by the Nation’s elected officials: the president and Congress.

That's what I was wondering...

he left before retirement (ex-wife insisted that he leave the military for her. then she left him  ) But they did come knocking after 9/11 when they were looking for soldiers with combat experience to go to Afghanistan. At the time however he was undergoing cancer treatments, so he didn't go.

I believe they did raise the cut off age to 42 for new enlistees didn't they?

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

That's a cut-off age of 42 for new enlistees -- that doesn't say what the cut-off age is for draftees. Being drafted and voluntarily enlisting are two very different things, as I'm sure everyone here knows. Therefore, the age limits on both might be different. I scanned that article and didn't find any mention of what the age cut-off was for being drafted. So that's very interesting. Either they don't want to report it, or they don't know for sure themselves (i.e. they may be in the process of changing it).
