it shows that "the sky is falling" mentality that some have isn't necessarily good. being prepared was never a bad idea.

Sure, but it gives rise the impression that reinstituting the draft is being considered on some level ;)

As I said, I don't know if this is a regularly scheduled thing. Perhaps it is.

perhaps someone has a wild imagination eh? next time i see that "this is only a test of the emergency broadcast system" i'll know the guvment is expecting us to get nuked soon.

I think you're arguing for the sake of arguing. I'm not saying that its a certainty, far from it - but its a rumble, possibly a distant one.

I don't think anything less than another 9/11 will result in a draft, and even then it will be a hard fought thing.

Didn't you say the same thing about the troop increase? ;)

and the same thing could be said about the democrats. first that more troops were needed and now it's more troops are not needed. ;)

my comment about the more troops, as you recall, was where they'd come from. sure, stretch out the deployments will get you more troops on the ground, but it's just a shell game that way. it's not increasing the number of the active force by any stretch of the imagination as those on the ground in iraq will require time back at base for recuperation/retraining and thus less troops later on. it's kinda like driving faster to get better gas milage.

Testing the system would seem to suggest to me, that someone is at least considering the possibility of reinstituting the draft sometime in the not too distant future. Unless of course, these tests are regularly scheduled...
If I were you I'd volunteer to beat the draft. ;)
I'm "aged-out" of Selective Service.

if you are under 38 you can still join.

Man, I am so out. And I feel like so old right now...

Statement from the Selective Service System, right on their homepage:

NO DRAFT ON HORIZON!

Currently there is a flurry of newspaper articles about Selective Service planning to conduct an exercise of its field structure in 2009. However, the public should not be alarmed. No draft for the military is about to be reinstated. Rather, Selective Service is planning to test its policies, plans and procedures as it has done routinely over the years if resources are available. Given the decline in agency funding, this exercise may be postponed again as it has been in the past. As always, Selective Service continues to do its job of being ready to conduct a draft and to manage a program for civilian alternative service for men classified as conscientious objectors when directed by the Nation’s elected officials: the president and Congress.

I fought for and earned my freedom.

Sounds what is needed is people to do these jobs that Americans will not do.

On that basis there should be no shortage of volunteers.

Home Depot car park would be a good starting point.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
