How important are documents for a B2 visa interview? More details inside...

I have a bit of a criminal past in the United States; I have been convicted of an aggravated felony in 2004, but I wasn't jailed, only fined to the best of my knowledge. I was ordered to leave on voluntary grounds, which I did within the given time period.

I'm applying for tourist visa for the first time in 10 years now. I've seen in various articles that interviewees should bring relevant documents to the interview. However, my problem is that I lost my documents during a moving accident a few years back.

Does this automatically screw me over, or will I at least have a chance to explain myself during the interview?

With a felony it probably does not matter but you will need details from the court.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

contact a criminal attorney in the city and state where you were arrested. Tell them what you are trying to do, first step is to locate your criminal record (if any) and see if there are any outstanding warrants and what is on your permanent record. This should cost about 1-2 hours of work, probably run you around $150-$400 depending on region of the US. Attorneys can do this over the phone with your name, birthdate, passport number and nationality are usually optional. After you get that record, depending on if you have a problem, the lawyer who did your background search in that region can probably refer you to an immigration attorney who will be able to determine if there are any obligations for entry with the US Immigration authorities.
