Compassionate Flight to the UK

My father has been diagnosed with colon cancer. They are operating within the next few days and I need to get to the UK a.s.a.p. and as cheaply as possible.

I am in DC and need to get to London.

Anyone have any suggestions.

G, I'm so sorry.

When we had to go, we had a travel agent contact the airlines for us--it can be done yourself, but the agent made it happen fast and fairly friendly.

Hit the USA forum at britishexpats.com too--the topic comes up frequently and someone will have a good idea. There is also a travel agent who posts there who might be able to help you (cindyabs).

I'm looking right now for you, but I figure a travel agent and britexpats will know where to go prolly better than me. And what about calling the airline direct? if there are seats that are empty and it's totally last min, maybe they will give you a bigger discount?

I also recommend phoning one of the airlines direct to see what kind of special deal they can offer you. When Tony's Dad was very ill, he phoned direct and they gave him a very good rate.

I just asked Wes (he works for travel agent). He said call Delta (1 800 221 1212) or US Airways (he can't remember that number).

From what he has seen so far they are good to help with situations like this.

At the moment the airlines are saying in the region of $2500, if I want to get there in the next week. I am probably going to have to hold off a week to get a cheaper flight. With my two children wanting to visit their grandfather also, price is something I am having to look at.

Hubby on the phone now to BA.

It has been hell of a week. I had surgery myself on Tuesday, not feeling too bad now, just about fit to travel. My son has been sick, my mother had polyps removed from her osophagus, my brother had a brain seizure, and now my poor old Dad has this.

It is particularly difficult to deal with since we only lost my sister a few years back to colon cancer. We never thought we would have to go through this again.

My son is beside himself - I dreaded the day something like this would happen. He is particularly close to his grandfather and we aren't sure he will be able to visit him. He has spent the entire day with me, very upset.

i ran it thru orbitz for one adult, depart tomorrow and stay for a week, from washington dc to london and back. here are the results.

Very sorry to hear about your situation. Airlines have "Condolence Fares" but not always, and they usually are #######. I was in the UK when my grandmother passed away. Their idea of a "Condolence Fare" was $2,000. Inevitably, I couldn't go home.

I would try anything.

Expedia (I looked up a flight for one, Friday morning, from DC to London it was about $600 round-trip)

Also try the smaller airlines as DC probably gets a lot of cheaper direct flights being closer.

G, I'm so sorry you're having to endure all this all at once. Just one thing at a time is enough, I can't imagine it all piled up like that!

Okay, managed to get a flight out on the 7th. Hubby's booking it now. I just have to be practical, even though I want to leave now.

Cost a total of $550 and there is an additional charge of $200 if I need to change the return date.

This is going to be a very long week.
