A lot depends on the requirements of the state where you will be residing. Check their DMV/DOL, etc. for specific requirements/instructions.

In most states, you would be able to drive for 30 days with a foreign license.

To get a new one, you will need to pass tests, which vary depending on the state.

As well, most states will only get you a DL to the duration of the I94 (sorry didn't see if your case is such that you have a GC upon arrival or need to adjust).

Yes, driving in Lima should entitle one to drive anywhere in the world with one arm tied on your back and blindfolded, but not everyone sees it that way.

I was there a couple of weeks ago and OMG!! Had the misfortune to get in Javier Prado at rush hour.

Aha, just saw you will have SSN and GC; in that case, you want to get your new DL asap. Some police departments take offense that you are residing in their state and do not have the proper DL...TX for example....

That's great to know that you were here and know what skills are needed to drive :P I will get the DL in GA since my relatives are there and then probably will be moving to TX for an IT job.
