Hello All,

I have looked around for a while and can't seem to come across some helpful information so thought I would try here.

When filing form I-130, can the marriage certificate be the abridged one you receive right after the service?

My wife and I are got married September 26 in South Africa (she is from there, I am a US citizen). Home Affairs in SA is taking forever to register the marriage and I would like to start the process if I can. PS..her father remarried a few months before us and his still isn't officially registered yet.

You can try, sometimes you will get an RFE for a copy of the marriage certificate and sometimes you will be denied without it. Your choice. Most of us wait until the marriage certificate is in hand.

As mentioned above, you can try to provide the one you have, though you may get an RFE. It really depends on if you'd rather wait now for it to get registered and get a copy or extend the processing time if you get an RFE.
