MandL,

I personally would not do that (start taking medications), unless you really do think you currently have TB & or if your private pulmo diagnoses you as such. Because look at it from the other side, if you are currently taking medications for TB, especially in advance of or at the time of the medical exam, what will the examiner think?

Follow Hank's advice. Whatever will happen will happen. Don't go to your pulmo and ask for medications you might not even need unless you really do have a current diagnosis of TB.

As for your last question, you will not be issued a visa unless you pass the medical. You won't even be allowed to have the interview until you do so.

Hi dr,

Thank's for this message,

Because i read on some sites that You can still take Medication for INACTIVE TB to prevent from being active. And isn't if you take short TB drugs will help to stop bacteria from growing? I'm just afraid with the sputim culture.

I'm thinking of taking medicine so by the time they ask me to udergo sputum culture the results with be negative.

I read with previous posts that They never had any symptoms of TB but were advised to take medication. This is what I'm afraid of that's why i'm thinking of going toy pulmonologist and ask for medication if needed.

MandL,

You really need to relax just as Hank says. This medical examination has two purposes. One, to prevent you spreading TB in the States & two, to make sure you are healthy!

Just let everything happen as it occurs. Don't try to work around this ahead of time like patients of mine coming to me a week ahead of their physical and asking for antibiotics because they're afraid that their urinalysis will show a UTI during their annual checkup the next week.

I know the possibility of being delayed 2-7 months is scary. But you'll have to face that fear and accept that possibility, just as others have before you. I know it sucks, hell, my wife is a doctor too, and she has that much more risk of exposure and having TB because of her job.

You need to face you fear. If you start being afraid again, just repeat this mantra. It's helped me face difficult situations in the past:

I must not fear.
Fear is the mind-killer.
Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration.
I will face my fear.
I will permit it to pass over me and through me.
And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path.
Where the fear has gone there will be nothing.
Only I will remain.

By all means, see you pulmonologist. Especially if you think you have TB. But don't go and insist on having medications prescribed to you (especially the anti-TB regimen) if they aren't needed or your pulmonologist gives you clearance.

Just remember that if anything shows up at SLEC, you'll have to go through the whole thing again as they don't accept test results from outside. They'll note it as part of your history and previous X-rays help in establishing your current status, but if they see anything suspicious, you'll have to under go sputum culture anyway even if you had it done outside previously.

I also have asthma too. Sometimes I feel my back right side aches. It's like there's something in there like muscle pain.

You think so? I'm so afraid now. I just hope if i undergo sputum culture the results will be negative.

Nothing to be afraid of, you are getting yourself all worked up and you shouldn't.

1) TB.... KILLS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you have TB, you need to get it cured so you can live a long and healthy life.

2) If you don't have TB you will look back on this time and shake your head scolding yourself for acting this way.

3)... well, who cares about #3 ..... relax, get your medical done and move forward with your life.

Many more people pass the x-ray with no problems rather than problems found :)

In other words, the odds are in your favor :)

God Bless and Good Luck :)

I had my medical the moment I had the case number cos I know I will undergo sputum due to tb history. Save time indeed! I had my medical result last Friday and Monday is my interview. Better if your mom should take advance medical esp if she has scar in her lung.

Hi AR and BA,

Did you tell them your TB History?

How's your Sputum Culture?

Hi AR and BA,

I just want to ask, What would be the best thing to do As i was diagnosed with INACTIVE TB before and took medication for 2 months.

Now I'm afraid to undergo medical because of Sputum Culture. Did they find Scar in you lungs?

Any suggestions when is the best thing to take my Medical Exam?

when are you diagnosed with inactive TB? how come you only took medications for only 2 months?

just to let you know if you have previous TB active or inactive it will show a scar in your xray for life. according to a pulmonologist I talked to.

BUT only the pulmonologist can tell if it is a SCAR or ACTIVE TB.

don't be afraid.... expect that you will undergo sputum and wait for 2 months. and PRAY that it will be NEGATIVE. God is good all the time.

sorry i didnt check this post. anyways, my mom didnt go to her early medical because she needs to undergo eye laser treatment first. probably this january.

as far as i know the TB treatment is 6 months. and not all patients has signs and symptoms like my mom. i just wish the result is negative too. the only thing that worries me is the new result of her xray which is CLEAR. so now i dont know if we need to tell slec of her old treatment or not.
