Letter from Canada Revenue saying I owe money

Shortly after we were married and I moved, I sent in some form that you fill out that decides if you are a resident or not anymore, I can't remember what it was, I didn't realize I had to file it until a couple months after I moved. I just received a letter from Canada Revenue that says they reviewed my eligibility for the GST/HSTC/NSALTC & have established that I am not eligible for it for July 2014 to April 2015 because the residency requirements were not met. I obviously know this, since I'm a resident I can't receive those benefits, and I haven't received any since I moved around the same time as filing taxes, so I didn't receive any since I filed my taxes. But in the letter it says I owe $204.50 from GST/HSTC (period Jul 2014 - Oct 2015) and $127.50 from NSALTC (same period). Then in an account summery it says New debits July - Oct, then underneath 2012 (??) and a different amount. So almost $500 altogether. I never received any money except a GST/NSALTC rebate in February. I thought they might get me to pay it back, it was $160, since I had moved when I got it and didn't realize at the time I wasn't eligible. Has anyone else gotten this letter? I will pay the money if it is something that makes sense. But I never received even close to $500. I'm receiving EI but it doesn't mention that. Is it even worth arguing with them about it?

If you didn't get payments they claim you did I would argue with them. I would find out though if the about is due to interest or some kind of crazy fee. Am I reading that right they are trying to say you owe them also for 2012? You didn't move till Feb 2014 if that is right I would send them a copy of your passport with the stamp when you moved.

If the letter states that you are not eligible for it for July 2014 to April 2015, and you didn't receive any money for that time period, then yes, I absolutely would question them about that. What month did you move? Since Rev Can pays out quarterly (Jul, Oct, Jan, Apr) then if you moved prior to April I would say that you owe April's payment back (if you received it.)

I am sure there is a number you can call on the statement. I would just call them to verify the amounts owing and get an explanation from them.

Good luck. The transition in the first 6 mos - yr is tough, lots of things to take care of. But it settles down after that, trust me. :)

Definitely double check with them, Thye may be unclear when you moved - did you used to receive cheques or do direct deposit? If your Cdn bank account is still open they may have deposited into it or conversely they may have sent cheques to your former address?

Thanks, I called my Dad and asked if I had any cheques sent, he said there was one sent but he didn't deposit it and is going to mail it back to them. I wasn't aware there was any sent but that is the only one. I only received one cheque after I moved (I moved in February), I thought it was in March but it must of been the April one. It must be the July one that was sent to my house that my Dad didn't deposit. I know nothing else has been put into my account. I'm going to call Monday. Just worries me, we have enough on our plates right now with Christmas coming up and we are going to NS for Christmas and it isn't cheap! & my husband just had a big Doctor bill we weren't expecting. Just trying not to worry about it until I call them. Hopefully something isn't right. I'll gladly pay back the April cheque but really don't want to pay $496!

Sorry, I did not notice your timeline which says you moved in Feb.

Chances are, with your Dad returning the July cheque, all you will likely need to pay is the April cheque, but I would definitely give Rev Can a call. I believe they have a way for you to pay it online from the US.

Enjoy your Christmas in NS. :)

Did you ever receive your greencard? I noticed it was in production but not received yet?

I haven't received my greencard yet :( I got an interview waiver early July and haven't heard anything since...was hoping to have it by Christmas, might make it a bit easier crossing the border, I do have AP on my EAD but still...makes me nervous!

I didn't call today as I was waiting to hear what my Dad had to say about it (I emailed him copies of the letter).
