Dear fellow expats,

First of all, I would like to thank the makers of this very resourceful website and everyone else who is willing to share his/her immigration experiences online!

It has been a great assistance to us while filing for the K-1 visa, AOS/EAD and AP :D.

I tried to apply for a CA driver’s license but my I-94 form is older than 30 days already :(. The DMV representative told us to wait till I have received my GC.

Hence my first question is, once I received my EAD, should I be able to apply for a California driver’s license already and if so, what kind of documents should I bring along to the DMV (I do already have a social security number)?

In addition, up till when it’s legally acceptable to drive around with a foreign (Dutch) driver license?

Thirdly, in case I would like to purchase a vehicle, would I be able to transfer the title of ownership to my name?

I tried to call the DMV today but the waiting time to speak to a DMV representative was two hours :S.

Many thanks in advance for your kind words of help & support!

Hi,

My husband is on the same boat. His I-94 has not expired yet, but it's about to. I was also told that he would have to wait until he receives his GC.

I did some research on the CA's DMV website:

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/dl/dl_info#two500

https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/dmv/?1dmy&urile=wcm:path:/dmv_content_en/dmv/dl/dl_info#BDLP

It states that you can use an Employment Authorization card to apply for a license. It also tells you what paperwork to bring to the office.

I'm not sure that it is still legally ok for you to drive with a foreign license. I was told by other fellow VJers that because once a K-1 is married, he/she is considered a resident, they must obtain a CA license.

Yes, you can transfer the title to your name. (We already did for my hubby. Easy as pie. :) )

Hope this helps! Good luck!
