Ferguson crisis costs taxpayers $5.7M…so far

FERGUSON, Mo. (KMOV.com) -- The massive police response to Ferguson in the wake of the shooting death of Michael Brown on Aug. 9 will take nearly $1.5M from the Missouri state budget.

According to the Missouri Department of Public Safety, the Missouri State Highway Patrol costs total $1.1M while activating the National Guard will cost the state roughly $384,000.

This estimate is solely for the initial response: from the time protests erupted right after Brown died to the last few weekdays of August.

St. Louis County officials estimated the county’s initial cost will be $4.2M. That’s a combination of money going to police overtime, fixing damaged cop cars and food and supplies for first responders.

It is unclear what will have to be cut to make up for the impact on the county’s budget.

“This will have an impact on future budgets,” said County COO Garry Earls. “It won't have an impact on the current year services, but we'll have to find a way to replace these dollars either by reimbursements from the state and federal government or by reducing services in the future from some of the things we already do.”

St. Louis City Police and Ferguson officials have not finalized the expenses of their responses.

This hasn't even started yet: residents have threatened to wreak havoc if the gubmint doesn't force QuikMart to rebuild (so it can be looted & burned again; not likely the company would rebuild, but I'm sure Mr. "pen & phone" is considering forcing them; "social justice" and all that). Plus violence has been promised if Officer Wilson doesn't land in jail, regardless of his guilt or innocence. This, mr. preznit is what comes of showing folks that the "rule of law" means nothing.

"reducing services in the future from some of the things we already do.” Why not just increase taxes. 8-10 percent sales tax should do it. Let the folks that caused the damage help pay for the cost.

Do a little digging marv on your own . Black panthers come to your town set up shop a few miles from your house and you are the only black person that has not a clue.in your town. You are our boots on the ground guy and just a total failure in that department. ... You rely on me to keep you up to date too much .

I do feel a bit disappointed over that pumpkin thing ... They could have kept in the spirit of things . They could have put on their black face when doing this riot .. You know in the same manner when the riots were in your hood.. How was that put on here ... white folks dressed up to look like black looters .. Yep that is it.. Why don't you know? You've been digging on Ferguson since day one. And it has nothing to do with you or where you live. Looks like if it isn't black people you could care less.

I never talked about white people dressed up as black people. So, maybe you should take that to where it belongs. Or, are you afraid to bring it to said person? Because that person will be more than happy to talk to you about, if you have the nerve. Or, do you lack the courage, even from the safety of your bunker computer?
