Social Security Card - Name Change question

4 posts in this topic

Recommended Posts

I notice it says to apply for SS card first in the Visa timeline here but I'm wondering if I should wait until we've had my new wife's name legally changed before applying for one or get one in her name now and have it changed?

Hope this is the appropriate place for this question.

Thanks in advance,

Mostly people on here say that you should apply for a SS as soon as you can after entering the US and than do a name change. In fact there are many people that apply the second or third day. The reason for this is because your I-94 should still be valid when applying for SS. Although there are people who wait to get the name change to apply for SS too.

I'm curious as well - our POE was this past Sunday and I keep reading people's comment about going to the SSA and just get the number, but some people say just wait, and some have been told to wait 3 weeks by SSA, not sure which to follow? We also want to change her last name to mine but not sure when that should be done.
