So I have a question regarding reporting of our marriage. We married in a civil ceremony in the US (as k-1 visa). We are planning on having a church wedding next year in the Philippines next year, so would reporting our civil marriage complicate or prevent us from having a church wedding in the Philippines?

Anyone have any experience with this?

Psst!! YOU ARE ALREADY MARRIED!!

You can have a renewal of vows ceremony, you can have a celebration, you can have a party, but you can't go get married with an actual license.... again.

Hank is correct.....(and funny). Your intentions are to renew your vows under God with a priest present. And there is NO reason to report your marriage to anybody. You already have your legal civil document to prove your marriage anytime and any place that you may need it.

That is correct, there is NO requirement to do Report Of Marriage to the Philippines if you do not want to have it recorded in the Phils.

Now if you want to renew your passport in your married name and have not reported your marriage - that isn't going to happen.

Haha yes I know we are already married :) I don't think I stated my question correctly. So we are married in US as a civil marriage. However we want to get married in a church ceremony in the Philippines, which is very important to boy of us and we want all her family there to be at the ceremony.

So her church is very strict about the marriage process and we were thinking that because we are already legally married in the US the church won't perform a marriage ceremony for us. Just wondering if reporting the marriage so she can renew her passport next year would complicate things... I am thinking that it probably will...

Funny that our local Catholic church has no problem with performing the ceremony of marriage but we can't fly 100+ relatives to the US not to mention the endless visa nightmares haha :)

The US civil wedding, which is legal, will be the legal date of marriage for any document for now and the future.

The "ceremony" in the Philippines is just what it is "a ceremony" that you are sharing with friends and family in celebration of your marriage union that took place in the USA (civil wedding). The "civil wedding" is the one that you report to NSO via the consulate here in the USA that has jurisdiction where your wedding took place.

When you go to the Philippines you cannot get a marriage license (because you will have to declare that you are single, which you are not so you are perpetrating fraud) in the Philippines and re-do what is already been consummated prior in the USA.

So plan the "church ceremony" and invite all your guests and have fun.

Ahhhhh... Catholic, all I have ever heard is the church won't do it once married.

ROM has nothing to do with the church's decision, nor does renewing the passport... the church only looks at you being married already, they want you to go to the civil register get a marriage license .. the whole nine yards.

Definitely not an expert on the Catholic Church here, but I would be very surprised if a priest would not welcome you taking your "vows before God" in the church.

I think your best bet is have her mother go to the priest and ask.

Hi,

We are having a similar problem.

We forgot (didn't know) we had to do a ROM and it's probably too late at this point since we are trying to have our philippines church wedding on March 5 .. if we travel back to the Philippines with just our regular U.S. marriage license / registration will we have a problem getting renewal of vows in a church without the ROM ?

thanks

ROM has nothing to do with any church, or renewal of vows.

ROM is just what it is - Reporting Of Marriage abroad, letting the Philippines government know you are married. BTW it is not too late to file your ROM and still important to do IF you want to renew your passport in you married name.

wow thanks for the immediate response Hank ! your the best..

And yes we still want to do the ROM but right now it's a logistics issue, we are in Nevada and we got married in NY. (basically trying to avoid the flight back to NY since we are on the west coast already it's easier to fly to phils from here).

The consulates seem to only process ROM in their region so we can't use California. So basically if the lack of a ROM doesn't prevent us from renewing our vows in a church in the Philippines, we can still go back and try to have our renewal wedding on March 5 if the church allows us ? .

We need to get back to the Philippines soon so my wife can prepare all the paperwork like baptismal cert and other required stuff.

Regards, Mike

You do ROM through the mail.

yes that is an option but we don't feel comfortable sending passports through the mail at this point so close before our trip. As long as the ROM will not stop us from traveling, getting her K2 daughter or getting married in a church over there.. then we will just wait to do ROM when we get back in April.

Do you see any issue with waiting another few months ? thanks!

You do ROM through the mail.
