Hi there,

I'm a US Citizen that's planning to have a baby in Canada in March. My whole family is renting a place there for several months (it's been planned for a long time, before I was pregnant) and the timing just happens to coincide. My husband is a Japanese citizen. (Also, I DO have health insurance valid in Canada and a health savings account. I know that can be a sensitive topic.)

My question is, how long will it take to get the CRBA once I've had the appointment at the at consulate (the ones closest to the rental home are Calgary and Vancouver) and the US passport? I've found this very helpful guide: http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/398109-applying-for-a-consular-report-of-birth-abroad-crba/ but I'm hoping someone has gone through this and can give me an estimate. Is this another waiting game, like AOS, or something that's approved fairly quickly?

Anything else I might be missing as well? Thank you.

Day 0 - 2 May 2012 Mailed AOS package overnight delivery
Day 139 - 17 September 2012 Interview & APPROVED on the Spot!! :)

The first step will be to make sure that your child will be a US citizen at birth.

Based on the information you provided, your child falls into the category of one US citizen parent and one foreign parent and birth occurs after 1986. In this case USCIS says you child will be a US citizen if he/she is born abroad and if: "The parents are married at the time of birth and the U.S. citizen parent had been physically present in the U.S. or its territories for a period of at least five years at some time in his or her life prior to the birth, of which at least two years were after his or her 14th birthday."

If you've been a US citizen for a long time and have lived in the US for a long time, there won't be a problem. Just make sure you meet the requirements listed above. I point this out because the Canadian ties you mention make me wonder if you are a recently naturalized Canadian which might mean that you child would not become a US citizen at birth. Of course, if you decide to give birth in the US, the child will be a US citizen at birth.

I'll let others answer your Canada-specific CRBA questions.

Thank you for your response. I'm only a US citizen (lived here basically my whole life) so gathering evidence of residence shouldn't be too much of a problem (hopefully).

On one hand this family trip is incredibly convenient because our home in California is about 1 hour away from the nearest hospital (and my husband doesn't even drive!), and my family will be there, but on the other hand this is a lot of trouble to make sure my baby will be a US citizen too...
